African Rail Company, also known as ARC, was founded in 2013 on a firm belief in the future of rail transportation in Africa and a vision of a group that would lead the rail logistics industry on the continent.
We provide commercial freight rail transportation services throughout Southern Africa.
Our core business is the transportation of fuel; we are the largest fuel transporter by rail in both Mozambique and Zimbabwe. We also transport bulk commodities and have made significant investment in our container and bulk commodities divisions.
We pride ourselves on strong relationships with government rail authorities and exceptional operations expertise enabling us to provide superior service to our clients.

WE ARE RAIL
We are the premier rail logistics operator in Southern Africa. We transport liquids (such as fuel), dry bulk and containers on behalf of our clients across the region.
RELIABILITY, TRACKING, SECURITY & INSURANCE
We supply capacity on time and according to strict quality and compliance standards. We provide real time tracking so our customers can confidently plan their cargo flows, cashflows, purchases and sales. We are also the only rail operator to offer Goods in Transit Insurance 100% underwritten by Lloyds of London.
ON THE GROUND TEAM
We coordinate and expedite loading, clearing and associated documentation to minimise cargo dwell time and efficiently manage the offloading process at the desired destination.
TURNKEY SOLUTIONS
Where transportation is required beyond the rail network, we arrange agile intermodal solutions to link our rail corridors via road and sea. It is our job to expeditiously solve any unforeseen issues that may arise so that our clients experience a seamless A-to-Z experience.

LOWERING COST
One tonne of freight can be railed roughly 200 km on a single litre of fuel vs. 60 km by truck.
Greater volumes also create economies of scale, further reducing costs which can then be passed onto customers.
INCREASING EFFICIENCY
The time taken to clear cargos by rail on a per-tonne basis is significantly lower than trucking.
Rail-based solutions also allow for more efficient loading and discharging operations which translates to better financial returns as well as reduced congestion at origin and destination.
REDUCING CONGESTION
Replacing trucking with rail takes cargo pressure off roads, significantly relieving congestion and increasing road service life and road safety.
ESG CREDENTIALS
Rail is the only environmentally and socially-conscious solution capable of overcoming the logistics bottlenecks that hinder the growth of Africa as a world-class source of essential commodities. Rail based solutions are proven to be safer than trucking. On a like for like basis, rail produces around ⅓ of the CO2 emissions of trucks, reduces air & noise pollution, road accidents and the spread of HIV and other diseases.
